FERC to Host Jordan Cove Energy Project Scoping Meetings

On June 9, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission published a Notice of Intent related to the Jordan Cove Energy Project – a liquefied natural gas export terminal and associated pipeline being proposed for southern Oregon. Among other things, the Notice of Intent, or NOI, announces that FERC will begin preparing an Environmental Impact Statement for the project. As part of that work, FERC will hold a series of public scoping sessions in late June. The scoping period is intended to identify potential environmental issues and other community concerns; comments received must be considered by FERC as it prepares the EIS.

These meetings will be hosted by FERC, which is the lead federal agency for preparing the EIS and providing approval or disapproval for the project. Other federal agencies will be involved. The state of Oregon will also be closely involved, with numerous state agencies serving in permitting or other regulatory roles, or offering review and analysis of the EIS and other materials. The Oregon Department of Energy serves as the lead state agency for overseeing Oregon’s interests in the federal siting process, and we’ll provide regular updates about state efforts related to the export facility and pipeline project as various regulatory processes move forward.

FERC’s Notice of Intent includes specific information about submitting comments on the project, either in person at one of the above meetings, or via email or mail. Comments are due on or before July 10, 2017.

The proposed Jordan Cove Energy Project has changed, so even if you submitted public comments previously, you will need to resubmit them to ensure they are considered as part of the current project review. The NOI includes instructions on submitting comments electronically using either the eComment of eFiling feature available on the FERC website.

For more information about this particular project, visit the FERC website, where you can use the “docket search” feature by entering the Jordan Cove docket number, PF17-4.
