Be an Energy Star

Did your old dishwasher fill your kitchen with suds for the last time? Your freezer melt your brand new carton of gelato? Or maybe you’re just feeling ready to make the switch to LED light bulbs at home. Energy investments at home can be big or small – but how you shop can make a big difference. Energy efficient appliances and bulbs save energy… and save you money!

When you shop for new appliances, look for the ENERGY STAR label to ensure you’re making a smart energy choice.

The Environmental Protection Agency’s ENERGY STAR program has been helping people save energy since 1992. The program tests products on the market, and guarantees their efficiency rating! For example, ENERGY STAR LED lights must have a minimum three year warranty.

The EPA estimates that thanks to ENERGY STAR efforts, the U.S. has reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 2.5 billion tons since 1992. ENERGY STAR-rated products have also reduced utility bills – by an estimated $362 billion.

Some ENERGY STAR-rated products you buy for your home may also make you eligible for an Oregon Department of Energy Residential Energy Tax Credit. Energy efficient heating or cooling devices, like ductless heat pumps, could earn you a tax credit on your Oregon income taxes.
