Countdown to the Eclipse

The countdown is on – we are just one month away from the August 21 total solar eclipse, which will begin its path across the United States right here on the Oregon coast! The eclipse will last from 9 a.m. to 11:45 a.m., with totality lasting about two minutes around 10:15 a.m. Experts say that central and eastern Oregon could have some of the best eclipse viewing in the country, so Oregon is counting on up to one million visitors to view the celestial show from our state. Increased visitors will likely affect our roads, highways, public services, and more.

The Oregon Department of Energy is teaming up with fellow state agencies so we’re ready for the influx of visitors. Get your family prepared by making sure you have a plan in place for eclipse day. Will you be traveling? Expect heavy traffic – make sure you have gas in your tank or your electric battery charged, and practice patience. And don’t forget your safety-rated eclipse glasses so you can join in on the special event!
