Resolve to Go Green in 2018
Thinking about your New Year’s resolutions? Why not focus on going green in 2018? Even small changes can make a big difference – and we think these resolutions will be easy to stick to!
Switch to LED Lighting: if you haven’t made the switch to energy efficient LEDs, this is the year to do it. LED bulbs have come down in cost, are durable, and use less energy than incandescent or CFL bulbs. They are also cooler to the touch, and come in a variety of sizes, shapes, dimmable models, and more. Take advantage of end-of-the-year sales (half off LED holiday lights, anyone?).
Drive Electric: this resolution may be a bit spendier, but the vehicle industry is there to help if you’re ready to switch to a zero- or low-emission electric car or hybrid. From passenger vehicles to hatchbacks to SUVs, there are more options than ever for going electric. Not ready to buy new? Check out used and lease options. Forth (formerly Drive Oregon) has a great online tool to help you find the right car for you and your family.
Get a Home Energy Score: a Home Energy Score, or Home Energy Performance Score, gives your home a grade based on its energy use and efficiency – similar to the bright yellow Energy Guide label you’ll find on your home appliances. Your score will help you better understand how your home compares to other homes in the region, and where you can make improvements to increase your score. Live in Portland? A Home Energy Score will be required if you plan on putting your home on the market!
Enroll in Renewable Energy: your electricity provider may have optional green energy programs available to you. For a minimal extra cost each month, your home could be powered by renewable energy, such as solar, wind, hydropower, and others. Visit your utility’s website to learn more.
Enhance Your Efficiency: improve the efficiency of your home buy sealing leaky windows or ductwork, wrapping your hot water heater and pipes, buying ENERGY STAR-rated appliances, and installing a programmable thermostat. Weatherizing your home and improving its efficiency will help keep your home warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer.
