University of Oregon Team Makes History in U.S. DOE’s 2021 Solar Decathlon

Congratulations to Team Riparian

For the second year in a row, a team of architecture students at the University of Oregon, led by Professor Ihab Elzeyadi, have been awarded top prizes in the U.S. DOE’s Solar Decathlon Design Challenge. Team Riparian was awarded the First-Place Gold Trophy in the Elementary School Division and the Grand Jury Award across all divisions of the competition.

“This is a monumental achievement and the first time in the competition’s 20-year history to have an architectural team sweeping both awards two years in a row,” said Elzeyadi. His 2020 team, Team Polaris, also won both awards.

Team Riparian’s 2021 project focuses on a redesign for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary – an elementary school in Portland’s historically Black Albina neighborhood. The design would make the school Net-Zero by combining social, economic, and environmental sustainability strategies.
