Grounded Podcast Episode 52: Hoping for blue skies, planning for black skies
In counties around the state and at ODOE, we’re planning for events we hope don’t happen: emergencies disrupting energy and fuel supplies. Climate change, extreme weather, and cyber risks are straining our energy systems and furthering the need for energy resiliency.
Resilience is one of the Oregon Energy Strategy’s five pathways representing the direction the state needs to take to meet its energy goals. Strengthening resilience across all levels of the energy system will enhance Oregon’s ability to adapt to climate change and mitigate other risks.
The Oregon Energy Security Plan and the Oregon Fuel Action Plan identify risks to Oregon’s fuel sources. In an emergency, ODOE coordinates response from industry, federal, state, and local organizations to restore petroleum supply during shortages or disruptions, such as during extreme weather or damage to pipelines.
At the county level, ODOE supports local energy resiliency through programs like the County Energy Resilience Grant Program for local resiliency plans and the Community Renewable Energy Grant Program for planning and implementing projects.
In this episode of Grounded, we’re joined by ODOE’s Energy Security Manager Traci Naile to discuss ODOE’s planning and response and Mid-Columbia Economic Development District’s Energy and Project Manager Lindsay McClure to discuss resiliency planning at the county level.
